African music is essentially traditional or folk music, transmitted orally. It is characterised by an omnipresent rhythm, often linked to dance. It is played at festivities and ceremonies such as circumcision, baptism, marriage, initiation, healing and funerals.
In some African countries, music is also linked to griots, the traditional storytellers who convey the memories of their people. Traditional dance performances combine singing, percussion, masks and traditional dress.
To the sound of percussion instruments (Djembé, Doumdoumba, N'goni) and the balafon, the dancers and musicians offer performances full of rhythm and vitality.
