The origins of Carnival :
With its religious origins, Carnival was a way for Christians to celebrate and eat meat one last time before beginning the forty days of Lent synonymous with deprivation.
The custom of carnival in the West Indies was introduced by French Catholics who wanted to celebrate before the restrictions they imposed on themselves during Lent.
The West Indians soon put their own stamp on the festivities, creating original disguises and masks reminiscent of their African origins, and drowning it all in the rhythms of the drum.
Today, carnival in the West Indies is a traditional festival that brings together all those who enjoy entertainment and marks the reunion of a people with its cultural rites and traditions. Carnival entertainment takes place every year in all the communes of Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana.
